Punta Cana International Airport is owned by a private owner  — Grupo Punta Cana. The airport is built on an area of 2 million square meters, whose activity began in 1984 with a small airstrip and a small building. In the first year the airport received 2,976 passengers.

Today the airport can offer a taxi service, 8 outputs, 3  information desks, 6 baggage packing points, offices of arrival and departure, VIP-room, 50 sections of passengers registration, gift shops and duty-free shops.

Punta Cana International Airport can also offer a VIP terminal for private flights. The airport accepts all types of aircraft from  different countries, as well as small planes, helicopters and serves local flights.

During the tourist season the airport takes up to 250 flights a week. At the moment, the airport takes 48% of all flights arriving into the country with the passengers, that as the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic Statistics defines the airport the most important airport of the Dominican Republic.
